ASH FLANDERS IS NOTHING

After a damning prophecy from a Dutch wizard, multi award-winning cabaret artist Ash Flanders confronted his own nothingness the only way he knew how – by examining a day in his life in a show called Ash Flanders is Nothing

This is not that show.

The new Ash Flanders is Nothing pairs the original day with a day from 2020. A day that brought with it a new prophecy, another race against time and an even more frantic search for somethingness. Before you know it you’re outrunning death, meeting a lizard named Cookie, loitering by a helipad, howling in a park, singing with a Christian rock band and holding a pillowcase full of birds.

Mixing storytelling with song and comedy with tragedy, Ash invites you on a profoundly funny freewheeling time-traveling journey like no other. Because when life is this gleefully punishing, the material just writes itself.

Ash Flanders is Nothing played to sold out houses over two nights at the Brunswick Ballroom, with over 600 attendees and was critically acclaimed.

Director: Stephen Nicolazzo

Musical Director: David Barclay

★★★★1/2 “Director, Stephen Nicolazzo has guided Flanders through the shifts of tone and depictions of these profoundly painful experiences with thoughtfulness and care. This performance allows us to bear witness to the development of an artists voice and personality in the wake of trauma.” Darby Turnbull, Theatre People

“Beautifully written, thoughtful and brave, and in places, quite moving. Mining the depths of family, friendships and relationships, Flanders’ self-deprecating honesty is authentic and genuinely raw. Directed by long-term collaborator, Stephen Nicolazzo carefully balances scenes of tragedy with comedy. Endlessly entertaining, each story confidently told told with passion and restraint.” Rohan Shearn, Australian Arts Review
